Abstract

This conference presentation characterized the so-called Debate on science and life philosophies, which took place in China in 1923, as one primarily between intellectuals based in humanities and in the sciences. The main thesis is that the scientists, usually portrayed as victorious, in fact did not convincingly win over the humanities either in arguments or in long-term influence.
