Interferon beta in the current treatment of multiple sclerosis

Publication at First Faculty of Medicine |
2013

Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic atoimmune disease of the central nervous system and the most frequent neurological condition leading to disability in young people. Causal MS therapy is not available to date.

However, diagnostic procedures are routinely avaliable and a broad spectrum of modern anti-inflammatory drugs is used. It is well known that early treatment initiation immediately after diagnosis clearly improves the prognosis of MS patients and postpones late disease stages associated with irreversible disability.

This article summarises the diagnostic and treatment process in newly diagnosed MS patients, focusing on interferon beta treatment.
