The book presents a diachronic view on synchronic written corpora of the SYN series that cover consecutive time periods. The main aim is to discover possibilities and limitations of detection of language development tendencies based on the SYN-series corpora; their composition is also evaluated as a secondary outcome.
The method is applied in several variants on different subcorpora and evaluated in detail on the level of lemmata and lexical combinations. As it is not easy to distinguish emerging diachronic shifts from naturally existing synchronic variability, statistical significance of frequency differences is additionally verified by consulting the individual corpora and final interpretation of the results is adjusted by the information about their exact composition.
