Melodemes in speech: Their stability and confusions

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2013

Abstract

The melodeme relevant, is a stabilized part of sentence intonation, which serves to distinguish particular types of attitudinal modality. Differentiation between F0 contours belonging to individual melodemes is sufficent in theoretical description as well as in acoustic reality of neutral speech.

In expressive or emotional speech, confusion between the intention of the speaker and the interpretation of the listener cannot be ruled out. A perceptual probe prepared to follow similarites of contours of different melodemes and their recognition when isolated from context is presented in the paper.
