"So what kind of epithet shall we coin for him?" Medieval rulers in the chronicler's trap

Abstract

Georges Chastelain, the official Burgundian chronicler, relates a crisis of power on the ducal court. Philip then undertook numerous advantures, aimlessly wandering in the forests.

This is described similarly to courtly romances. The article reflects on the author's liberty to construct a story, as well as to invent an epithet for a ruler.
