Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a degenerative disease occuring in up to 5% of men aged 65 and over, and it can potentially be fatal. The risk of a rupture increases with the gradual expansion of the aneurysm.
Many countries have instituted screening programmes meant to discover AAA early on, which means that there is an increasing number of patients with so-called small aneurysm (below 5cm), for whom the basis of the treatment of their condition is conservative approach, with regular ultra-sound examinations tracking the size of the aneurysm.
