Abstract
The article is concerned with the etymology of the Latin adjective feber, found in Varro’s De lingua Latina (5,79), regarded by standard etymological dictionaries as an ad hoc neologism conceived by Varro. This interpretation is rejected and some possible variants of the origin of the word are offered.
