This paper aims to present the state of Bohemian studies as part of the Slavonic studies at three Bulgarian universities – Sofia University, Plovdiv University and Blagoevgrad University. The focus is primarily on teaching Czech as a foreign language: the difficulties that the Bulgarians have in learning Czech language are described, the curricula are analyzed, the main textbooks and school aids are given.
Activities, which involve students during their studies, and opportunities for professional development in the light of new realities, are identified. Although the development of university Slavonic studies was strongly affected by the socio-political changes, inBulgaria the Bohemian studies continue to be perceived as prestigious and desirable specialty.
The arguments in favor of such a finding are not limited to traditional cultural ties, but also have pragmatic dimensions.
