Abstract
Current opinions and evidence for sexual transmission of the major etiology of microbial inflammation of the vagina are discussed. Sexual transmission of Trichomonas vaginitis and bacterial vaginosis are generally accepted as the main or the only mode of transmission, while the evidence for it in yeasts is not convincing.
The existing evidence suggests that vulvovaginal candidiasis is of endogenous origin with the gastrointestinal tract as a main source of yeasts.
