The article deals with the topic of adolescents admitted to the psychiatric in-patient unit due to a drug-related suicide attempt. Authors demonstrate that this group represents a heterogeneous sample in view of the motivation of the self-destructive behavior.
The motivation of self-destructive behavior covers abroad spectrum of severity, ranging from a clear decision to commit suicide over escaping and ambivalent attempts, up to those primarily intended as a non-suicidal self-harm. The suggested difference between a suicidal attempt using drugs and a non-suicidal drug overdose, proves indeed useful in clinical practice.
This thesis is proven by way of a presentation and discussion of several case reports.
