The World Health Organization recommends to continue breastfeeding with appropriate complementary food up to 2 years or beyond. Although adopted by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic as well, this recommendation often still meets with scepticism and only few mothers breastfeed their child for more than one year.
This article provides a brief overview of nutritional and health outcomes of prolonged breastfeeding and describes existing breastfeeding patterns after 6 month of age.
