2013

Abstract

Acute infections of upper respiratory tract, the most commonly encountered infection at a GP's surgery, are usually viral in nature. Antibiotic treatment is meaningful only when bacterial aetiology is established.

The article summarises the most common forms of upper respiratory tract infections, along with their aetiology and the possible antibiotic treatment, including recommended dosage.
