Female condition affects perception of male body attractiveness

Publication

Abstract

Previous research has shown that the attractiveness of men’s physique is in general related to cues of physical fitness and health. However, research on facial attractiveness showed that various factors related to the current state of the rater modulate these preferences.

Nevertheless, analogous research on men’s body attractiveness is missing. Here we tested the effect of various individual’s factors on rating of attractiveness using a new, larger set of stimuli. 1113 Czech women (mean age=25.6) completed a questionnaire about their height, weight, menstrual cycle phase and rated a set of 25 male body silhouettes varying in the level of their endo-, meso-, and ectomorphic component.

The silhouettes were taken from Sheldon’s Atlas of man in order to describe the variability of the male physique in a complex fashion.
