Formal Innovation and (Re)Invention of the Past in the Old English Battle of Brunnanburh and Tennyson’s Version of the Poem

Abstract
The comparison of rhetorical and prosodic features of a late Anglo-Saxon poem and its adaptation by Alfred Tennyson shows that the political and historical implications of the original were substantially reduced and the poem was adapted in the manner of Romantic medievalism.
