This text focuses on the film medium in terms of new imaging techniques and a unique combination of new technology; the video- and audio format 3D HFR and Dolby ATMOS. We view the film itself, the medium of film, is an imaging technology, cultural and artistic, but also as a specific information system.
All essential features are reproduced from the medium of photography, they are further enhanced with the movement dynamics, time and – depth – of space. In this theoretical approach, the medium of film is considered as an imaging art in the context of new imaging techniques, we look at the specific combination of images in 3D HFR and audio from Dolby ATMOS, which can be seen in the Czech Republic since the end of 2012, but only in the case of 1–2 motion pictures projected in only 1–2 multiplex theaters in Prague.
These formats show progress but also technical limitations, mainly because the format of the 3D HFR has been implemented so far only for the feature film „The Hobbit“.
