The main objective of this study is to present a series of iron objects acquired through research using metal detectors on the territory of the defunct village of Spindelbach in 2009. The article further aims to assess the potential of metal detecting in the research into medieval villages, especially into the non-agricultural activities of their inhabitants.
As a rule, these activities are only illustrated by iron items – craftsmen’s tools. In relation to the topical problem of amateurs using metal detectors, the article also comprises preliminary results of current archaeological research addressing the issue of what proportion of information gets lost owing to amateur metal detecting.
