This paper analyzes the development of mortality in Russia from 1960 to 2010, with focus on the period after the collapse of the Soviet Union, where the intensity of mortality was sharply increasing. Using various decomposition methods, which are in demographic literature often used to analyze mortality, the mortality in the largest country of the world will be explored more in detail.
Using multiple methods of decomposition helps to see mortality from multiple angles and it will be possible to reveal hidden features of mortality development in Russia.
