Higher education (HE) systems in 3 countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia) have been compared from the point of view of the national structure of HE sector, most common University model, international influences on national policies, percentage of enrolled students in HEIs and other factors. Roles of key institutions responsible for HE policy have been reflected with regard to the sustainability policies and actions, especially in relation to HE functions in teaching and research and its social responsibility.
Policy measures such as national reforms addressing education for sustainable development have been analysed with focus on the structure of coordination, responsibilities and resources set for higher education for sustainable development. The author asks questions whether there are some ESD relating challenges for HE policy and/or obstacles for the implementation of ESD in HE policy expected for the next years.
National and international framework for the Higher Education Sector has thus been investigated based on the data from 3 explored countries.
