Absence of microbiota (germ-free conditions) accelerates the atherosclerosis in apoE-deficient mice fed standard low cholesterol diet

Abstrakt

In contrast to the absence of atherosclerotic plaques in conventional ApoE-deficient mice, germ free mice consuming the same low cholesterol diet developed plaques in the aorta. The findings support the protective effect of commensal bacteria on atherosclerosis development.
