The Fascination by Invisibility

Abstract

The point of departure of the paper is an analysis of temporal structure of Havlíček's Neviditelný. The author shows that time is treated both as a retrospective and prospective movement, implying memory on the one hand and the uncanny character of the prospective anticipation of future events on the other.

The second part of the paper raises general questions of interpretation: given the fact that all events are described from the point of view of the narrator, any attempt to reconstruct the alleged mental universe of other characters, however legitimate it might be, implies a more of less obvious misinterpretation.
