Abstract
The book "Subdued Planet" is exceptional in the Czech environment as it links the previous approach of a natural scientist with views of social and technical sciences. It is intended primarily for university students of natural science and the humanities concentrating on environmental protection, but also to wider public interested in these problems.
It shows that the development in the last historical period has brought unprecedented growth of human prosperity, albeit at the cost of damaging natural systems and resources, on which it is dependent, and provides a detailed report concerning natural processes in global context. The book also presents solutions on how to use the natural resources efficiently and economically and how science, technology or social institutions can contribute to it.
In the closing part it offers an optimistic view of the future.
