Mama’s Boy, Daddy’s Girl? The Effect of Parent, Age, and Gender on Child VSL

Publication

Abstract

We used conjoint choice experiments to elicit parents’ WTP to reduce their own children’s risk of dying. Surveys conducted in Italy and the Czech Republic reveal that child VSL is €4.6 million and CZK 27 million (€1.7 million PPP), respectively.

The latter is much smaller than a simple income-adjusted benefit transfer of the Italy VSL. Evidence that VSL varies with child age and gender is mixed.

Estimation results from the Czech sample suggest that income constraints are reflected in the WTP for risk reductions, and that there may be “quantity v. quality”-of-children considerations.
