Abstract

The transformation of ownership relations after 1990 and the revival of real estate market have been mirrored into the changes of physical and social spatial urban structure. The social environment of localities of Prague metropolitan region has been changed as a consequence of this transformation.

Authors think of social environment as a complex of characteristics of social spatial structure and social climate. Two localities – with different types of new housing construction and position within metropolitan region but similar social structure of their residents – were chosen for comparison.

Case studies were carried out in new district of condominiums Velká Skála in Trója and suburban community of Šestajovice. Various aspects of social environment are examined: integration of new residents into local community, character of interpersonal relations, extent of political participation and civic engagement.
