Mycophagy – dream and reality in soil saprophagous mites (Acari: Oribatida and Acaridida)

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2009

Abstract

For the estimation of food selection, especially mycophagy, several mite species sampled from the field microhabitats (Damaeus, Belba, Metabelba, Achipteria, Hermannia) as well as from our rearing boxes (Tyrophagus, Scheloribates) were tested. Several micromycetes were offered as food from our fungal collection (Alternaria, Fusarium, Penicillium, Mucor).

These tests involved microanatomy, excrements analyses, plating of mite homogenates and enzyme tests. The definition of an actual mycophagy was created.
