Conversion in Augustine (and its Neo-platonic roots)

Publication at Protestant Theological Faculty |
2009

Abstract

The paper deals with Augustine´s notion of conversio influenced by the Neo-Platonic epistophe. According to Augustine´s Confessions, his conversion (in one stage) was a way from the Neo-Platonic books to the mystical understanding of the Holy Scripture.

The notion of ?conversion? went through a similar process: from the Neo-Platonic constitution of the Intellect (or, for Augustine, of the Angels) it gradually changed into a religious and ethical conversion of a human being to the biblical God. This conversion has both individual and social aspect, as described in Augustine´s Confessions and City of God respectively.
