Two Trinitarian Metaphors: Gregory of Nyssa´s Ad Ablabium and Augustine´s De Trinitate VII

Publication at Protestant Theological Faculty |
2009

Abstract

The paper deals with two Trinitarian metaphors present both in the treatise Ad Ablabium by Gregory of Nyssa and in Augustine´s seventh book De Trinitate: the famous three men analogy and the less know metaphor of three golden items made from the same stuff. There is no certainty that Augustine directly knew Gregory´s treatise, the theological goals of both authors being very different.

Nevertheless, the similarity of both metaphors and their connection in both works is conspicuous and shows the convergences and differences between Augustinian and Cappadocian theologies.
