Abstract
The character of Saul intrigues the interpreters by the difficulties to determine the reasons of his rejection. Historically Saul reflects the lingering memory of the non-Davidic origins of the Israelite/Judean monarchy.
The narration in its present form however reminds the inevitably charismatic character of a Biblical king.
