Proper Interpretation of Elastase-1 Concentration in Stool: Experience of the Prague CF Centre

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |
2002

Abstract

Reduced stool concentration of pancreatic elastase-1 [E1] was found in the group of 116 cystic fibrosis [CF] patients, the mean concentration being 91.8 mug/g stool compared to 483.5 mg/g stool in the control group of 126 children. In 13 CF patients (mild and unknown CFTR mutations, I patient F508del homozygous) the E1 concentration exceeded the "cut-off" value of 200 mug/g stool.

Lower E1 concentrations were found in 14 control children without any clinical evidence of pancreatic insufficiency and with normal sweat chloride values. Interestingly, lower values of E1 were also observed in insulin dependent diabetes mellitus [IDDM] children, the mean concentration being 304 mug/g stool.
