Abstract

The authors present an account on statistical data of the patients' profile at the ENT department in the Frýdek-Místek hospital as regards selected surgical operations -adenotomies, tonsillectomies and septoplastic operations. 75 % of the operated patients are admitted on the day of the operation which is more demanding for the department than admission on the day preceding surgery. In 1994 the mean period of treatment was 5,13 days, in 1998 (January till July) 2,52 days, the bed occupancy declined from 79,3 % in 1994 to 62,95 % in 1998.

Shorter hospitalization and the shift of treatment to the domestic environment is accepted positively by the patients. It seems desirable to elaborate standards for short-term and one-day surgery which will ensure safety of these operations and will comprise medical as well as social factors.
