During the last 20 years every year the numbers of patients treated in Europe and worldwide by transplantation of bone marrow or peripheral haemopoietic cells is increasing substantially. Indications for and techniques of transplantation used in different transplantation centres differ, however, more or less.
This is why the European group for blood and bone marrow transplantations (EBMT) summarized in 1996 data from all European member centres, and based on contemporary European clinical practice and results of clinical studies, suggested transplantation indications and procedures for clinical practice. The Czech Republic was greatly retarded in this medical field.
Since the beginning of the nineties, however, the development in our country is similar as elsewhere. Every year the number of transplantation centres is rising, as well as the number of patients who have transplantations.
The transplantation section of the Heamatological and Oncological Society of the J.E. Purkyne Medical Association comprising representatives of contemporary Czech transplantation centres decided therefore to introduce rapidly the standards recommended by EBMT into clinical practice in our country.
The recommendations listed in the paper based in the first place on the conclusions of the EBMT were submitted to the committees of the Haematological and Oncological Society of the J.E. Purkyne Medical Association and were accepted and approved by both committees.
The objective of the work is to make haematological and oncological departments not engaged in transplantation treatment and doctors in the field familiar with contemporary views on the necessity of correct and early indication of transplantation in the patients interest.
