Upper urinary tract obstruction means the risk of permanent damage of kidney parenchyme, especially in concomiting urine infection. Thus the prompt solution of the obstruction is one of the most important tasks in the therapy of this condition.
This article attends to the issue of the solution of upper urinary tract obstruction in accute and chronic conditions. We discuss the choice between the derivation by means of nephrostomic catheter or double-J stent in various clinical conditions and we attend to the progress in the development of new materials and physical characteristics of the stents and the catheters
