Abstract
The history of placebo and placebo effect, definition of both term and possible origin of the actual meaning of the term placebo are described in the article. Further, several examples of placebo usage in human clinical practice are noted and a few of well-designed experiments are pointed out.
Then, psychological and physiological theories explaining the placebo effect are reviewed. The last part is devoted to the placebo effect and importance of conditioning in animals.
