Recently, MR tractography (MRT) has become an useful attractive tool for non-invasive visualization of main nerve fibers tracts using magnetic resonance imaging (MR) of the directional dependence of the water molecule diffusion. This paper brings an overview of theoretical backgrounds of MR data acquisition schemes and MRT reconstruction algorithms.
Some essential principles influencing final quality of MRT as a character of tracts or quality and type of MR data are discussed. A brief overview describes also published clinical applications and summarizes main results of an MRT in research of schizophrenia.
Potentials of MRT are demonstrated in three clinical cases of patients with brain lesion.
