Urinary sediment a technique of examination and interpretation of the finding by the clinical nephrologist

2006

Abstract

Examination of the urinary sediment is a non-invasive method of examination for the patient, which still furnishes a vast body of valuable information helping to optimize the diagnostic algorithm. Analysis of the urinary sediment findings belongs to the series of examinations of patients with unclear etiology of renal and renal tract diseases; it may also help to identify causes of changes in the clinical course of conditions diagnosed earlier.

Provided the analysis is undertaken outside the routine operation of a biochemical laboratory, the physician can spend more time on his assessment while also aware of the patient's clinical data, urinary sediment analysis becomes a valuable method providing most important information about the pathological processes occurring in the kidney and at different levels of the urinary tract.
