The accuracy of diagnostic procedures is of great importance in the detection of carotid stenosis. An earlier study from our department compared the extent of carotid stenosis as measured by digital subtraction angiography (DSA) and histological findings (2).

The results were rather surprising, where DSA markedly underestimated stenosis measured on histological specimen. Doppler ultrasonography (DUS) is widely used in the detection of carotid artery stenosis and is now often becoming the only diagnostic tool.

Prospective study was performed comparing the accuracy of Doppler ultrasonography (DUS) stenosis findings with measurements on histological specimens.
