Development of the concept of the treatment of carcinoma of the larynx

Abstract

The development of the surgical treatment of carcinoma of the larynx passed through several stages. After the phase of collecting of primary experience, radical surgeries - total laryngectomies have been mainly carried out.

The stage of partial laryngectomies, which could have been performed with good oncological and functional results due to the deepening of the knowledge of the anatomy of the larynx and its lymphatic supply, followed. Currently the treatment of advanced carcinoma of the larynx passes through the phase of looking for non-surgical approaches (preserving protocols), which would have sufřcient oncological safety and at the same time would enable to preserve the functional larynx of the patient.

The development of the surgery of the regional cervical lymph nodes also played a very important role in the surgical treatment of the carcinoma of the larynx. The development of the concept of the treatment of carcinoma of the larynx from the beginning until nowadays is described in this article
