Relatives of patients with schizophrenia experience considerable emotional and practical burdens, resulting in lower quality of life. 210 relatives - participants of psychoeducational programme - were asked to fill in the SOS-10 and the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaires. Our findings indicate that lower satisfaction with health, financial situation below average and parental role predict low quality of life.
At the same time the parents quality of life (N=158) is comparable to common Czech population. Participation in family psychoeducation reflects the willingness and readiness to cooperate in the treatment.
This active approach seems to preserve normal quality of life. It is therefore of the utmost importance to support and empower the relatives in the treatment of schizophrenia, with special attention devoted to parents who constitute particularly vulnerable group.
