Under defined conditions it is associated with anovulation and acts as a relatively reliable protection against unwanted pregnancy.
If these conditions are not met, it is necessary that the woman uses appropriate contraception method, taking into account the specific situation, which lactation and breast-feeding represents. Prevention of unwanted pregnancy is not only fulfilling of civil law family planning rights, but an adequate interval between pregnancies is also important for women's health.
A breast-feeding woman can be provided with a wide range of contraception methods, including hormonal contraception, if they correspond to her preferences.
