Active immunisation of domestic, and later of wild animals against rabies, was successful and in some West European countries this mortal disease was eradicated. The Czech Republic has ranked among these countries since 2004.
This success led to the changed strategy of immunisation against rabies. The article provides an outline of current valid recommendations of WHO and responses to specific questions concerning the anti-rabies prophylaxis which were adopted by the consensus of representatives of centres for infectious diseases and the National Reference Laboratory for rabies.
In the Czech Republic, provision of post-exposure rabies prophylaxis is in the competence of anti-rabies centres.
