Abstract

Nutritional status of the elderly is a basic determinant of health and disease. There is lack of studies about nutritional status of frail elderly in the Czech Republic.

The goal of our study was to evaluate nutritional status of elderly people admitted to the hospital and to compare two groups of them: patients living in institutional facilities for seniors and elderly patients who lived in residential settings. 281 patients older than 70 years who were admitted to the 2nd Department of Internal Medicine, University Hospital, Královské Vinohrady took part in our study. Low albumin level have had 34.1% of patients from institutional facilities and 22.3% of patients coming from residential settings.

The findings demonstrated a better heath/nutritional status and health perspective in patients who were living in residential settings than in patients from institutional facilities for seniors. There is evidence of poor nutritional status among residents in institutional facilities.
