The herpesviruses are some of the most widespread viruses throughout the world and cause a wide range of clinical disorders. Herpetic viruses are known for their ability to persist in the host organism for a lifetime with subsequent reactivation.
Both initial and recurrent infections proceed asymptomatically in most cases. Sometimes they are accompanied by typical symptoms.
However where immunity is deficient, herpetic infections tend to have a more serious course. Epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of these common infections are summarized in this review
