Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |

Abstract

Combined hormonal contraception is the most commonly used contraceptive method in most industrialized countries worldwide. Five decades of the development have resulted in progressive reduction in hormonal daily dase, changes in the estrogen andprogestin components and novel delivery systems in addition to the conventional oral contraceptives.

These advances were motivated by the eftort to eliminate specific risks associated with the use of exogenous steroid hormones while maintaining the high contraceptive efficacy and, at the same time, providing tailored non-contraceptive benefits. As a result, a wide range of combined hormonal contraceptives is currently available The article attempts to provide guidance on how to choose the most appropriate contraceptive method
