Paper is focused on epilepsy treatment during pregnancy and its risk to the developing embryo. As both, disease and treatment, are embryotoxic, it is essential to diminish their negative effects.
Aim of work is to inform about all up-to-date known risks resulting from the treatment. Typical malformations for AEDs (anti-epileptic drugs) fetal syndrome and its probable causes are described.
Methods, that are used for embryotoxicity evaluation and principle of teratology are mentioned. Except for common information about drugs, that are used for epilepsy treatment, information is focused on results of studies that are background for evaluation of the risk.
We refer also Czech Teratology Information Service (CZTIS) experiences with inquiries about epilepsy treatment during pregnancy. At the end, the recommendation for pregnant woman and physician is offered according to American Academy of Neurology guidelines.
