Abstract
Prevention of ophthalmic complications demands closely on collaboration between diabetologists, endocrinologists, general practitioners and educational nurses with the ophthalmologist and the patient. Besides, perfect knowledge of the disease is necessary for the success of this collaboration.
Therefore, this paper briefly summarizes the epidemiology and pathophysiology of the disease. Clinical manifestations and therapeutic procedures are presented.
Risk factors, prognosis and screening practice are discussed. In conclusion, the article defines the expertise assessment of eye complications.
