How to model psychomotor seizures

Abstract

Psychomotor (complex partial) seizure models may be induced by local applications of chemoconvulsants or by a local electrical stimulation of limbic structures; they are characterized by the occurrence of automatism and seizures. Kindling model, accomplished by repeated electrical stimulation of limbic structures, is a special model of the secondary generalization of the seizures.

In our study, we induced complex partial seizure model by electrical stimulation of the hippocampus to demonstrate the features of nervous system recovery after the seizure using EEG power spectra. In addition, we modeled complex partial seizures by systemic administration of kainic acid to determine the relationship between automatism and secondary generalization of the seizures.
