The article desribes the methodology of economy-wide material flow analysis and the concept of decoupling of environmental pressure from economic growth. Moreover, the indicators of material flows are used to express decoupling in the Czech Republic in 1990-2004 within the article.
It is shown that the profound decoupling occured over this period. On the other hand, when we relate material flow indicators to GDP (measure of material intensity) and carry out the international comparison, the comsumption of materials per unit of GDP is still more than 100 % higher in the Czech Republic than in Germany and Austria.
