IS CYCLING CONSIDERED AN ALTERNATIVE FOR EVERY-DAY TRAVEL IN CITY?

Abstract

The share of bicycle use for every-day trips in Czech cities is relatively low compared to the most western European countries. The paper analyses selected circumstances for a wider use of cycling in the Czech city of Pilsen.

The analysis is based on the survey data collected in 2005. These provide information on travel of the adult population.

About 60% of the respondents own a bicycle, mostly men, younger than 35 with higher income. Most often a bicycle is owned by those who posseses a car and a public transport pass at the same time.

There is a considerable difference in bicycle use for individual trip purposes. A more frequent choice of bicycle would be facilitated by infrastructure improvement, higher safety and bicycle storage facilities.

Still there is a higher willingness to switch to a more frequent use of bicycle by those who use public transport so far and lower by drivers.
