Abstract

Interest in pneumococcal infections in general and professional public began practically in connection with a possible vaccination of infants and toddlers conjugate vaccine. Greater attention was then given pneumococcal disease in adults and especially risk group of seniors.

It is available on the market for many years neglected pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine, which should be applied in accordance with Decree people in homes for the elderly and social care institutions. It is designed for children and adults indicated the risk of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD): primary and secondary asplenia, immune disorders, especially complement deficiency, persons with chronic diseases of the heart, blood vessels, respiratory tract, kidney, metabolic diseases, diabetes, for people over 65 years and more recently, smokers and people with asthma since 19 years.
