Drug profile - tibolone

Abstract

Tibolone is a synthetic steroid molecule that significantly affects the activity of estrogen, progesterone or androgen receptors, both directly and indirectly - through its own metabolites. Tibolone is a representative of substances with a tissue-selective effect - STEARs (selective tissue estrogenic activity regulators).

It selectively acts estrogenically on the cardiovascular system, bone tissue, vaginal mucosa and menopausal symptoms, but does not act on the breast and endometrium where the estrogenic effect is undesirable. Tibolone, as a completely unique molecule, has a beneficial effect on most symptoms of estrogen deficiency, including the reduction of bone loss in postmenopausal women.

In addition, it suppresses the unpleasant symptoms of menopause, while not significantly affecting the quality of the endometrium and does not cause breast tension. It is therefore mainly used to replace reduced estrogen production in postmenopausal women.
