Abstract

Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL) is a pore forming cytotoxin, one of many toxins associated with Staphylococcus aureus infection. The presence of PVL is associated with increased virulence of certain strains of Staphylococcus aureus, causing leucocyte destruction and necrotic lesions of soft tissues, including hemorhagic-necrotizing pneumonia, an aggressive condition that often kills patients although these are treated lege artis.
